Coming home from an artist in residency in a small and rarely visited Japanese seaside village, Maan realised that this was the most magical landscape she had ever encountered. The far-away regions feel like a forgotten part of Japan – a place between waking and dreaming that brims with Kami (Shinto gods), ancient history, traditional crafts, friendly folk, hot springs, and wild nature. Daily life there and the surrounding landscapes were often beautifully surreal. Fish leaping from a liquid-silver sea, a dragon’s eye on the shore, fluffy clouds in shrub form, ghibli-esque villages and tableaus that seemed to come straight out of uikyo-e prints.

The start of this series, Mura No Kokoro, was captured during an artist in residence by MONO Japan and MUJUN. This AIR was supported by the Embassy of the kingdom of the Netherlands, IAAF and stichting Oscar Maarsman in 2024.
